Gutierrez was reported missing from her Lancaster apartment on Tuesday, prompting an extensive search by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office. Four days later, her body was discovered wrapped in fabric down an embankment, according to officials.
Investigators said Gutierrez’s husband, 36-year-old Jossimar Cabrera, initially claimed she had been taken by ICE agents. He later gave other explanations, including that she had left with another man or been in an accident. Surveillance footage from a Ring camera reportedly showed Cabrera dragging a heavy object wrapped in fabric from the family’s apartment building before Gutierrez’s body was recovered.

Search and rescue teams confirmed the wrapping found in the forest matched the material seen in the security footage. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting an autopsy to determine Gutierrez’s cause of death.
Cabrera fled to Peru with the couple’s three children soon after giving conflicting accounts of his wife’s disappearance. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office has since confirmed that Peruvian authorities detained him. Officials are working on his possible extradition to the United States, where he could face murder charges.

Family members told ABC7 that Gutierrez had previously reported Cabrera for domestic violence in Peru and had recently told her mother she planned to file a report against him in the U.S. Relatives also confirmed that the couple’s three children are safe in Peru and currently staying with their maternal grandmother.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department issued a statement saying, “Jossimar Cabrera is currently believed to be in Peru, pending further investigation needed to bring him to justice.”
